Support my walk to save and protect our wildlife

This April, I am taking part in Walk on the Wild Side to support our scaly, furry and feathered friends.

Australian native animals are in crisis. More than 1,900 of our plant and animal species are threatened with extinction, including our iconic koalas, which are now endangered in many parts of Australia.

I'm conquering this challenge to raise funds for WIRES to give sick, injured and orphaned native animals their second chance of life in the wild.

Every year, WIRES responds to almost 150,000 urgent calls for help and assistance for animals in distress.

Your donation will ensure they can continue to rescue, rehabilitate and release our native wildlife and fund critical rescues and life-saving care.

Please DONATE NOW and support my challenge to save and protect our wildlife.

My Updates

Legends! Every one of you!!

Tuesday 29th Apr
I woke up at 4am I was so excited about today! The final five kms to reach my 100km goal.
And because I have such great faith in my friends, I got costumed up even though I was still $200 shy of my fundraising goal.
And boy did you all return that faith! The donations kept pouring in all day! And thanks to the incredible support, I have surpassed my goal of raising $1200!
This means another ambulance can be outfitted to respond to injured wildlife.  As I’ve been walking, the amount of roadkills on  so many roads has been heartbreaking, but so many more animals survive, but are badly injured or orphaned.  Please slow down at dusk and dawn. I’ve had a few near misses myself as I’ve driven to my start locations, and driving slow and looking out for leaping wallabies has helped me avoid adding to the numbers.

On a lighter note, I completed today’s hike dressed in pyjamas, tiara, belly dance coin belt and jewelled choker; with toilet rolls for curlers in my hair.
I got some strange looks from people driving past on their way to work and school, but the most intense and gobsmacked look I got was from two miniature goats that obviously thought I was the most ridiculous thing they’d ever seen! Lol

A massive thanks to all my sponsors (please take the time to scroll through to acknowledge their generous contributions) as well as all of you who have cheered me on, come out walking with me, and encouraged me every step!
I would also like to acknowledge that I couldn’t have done this without the support of strong painkillers and supporting shoes, braces, walking poles and timely massages… and lots of different heat creams and oils, supplements and turmeric! It’s been a challenge and sometimes quite painful; but oh so worth it.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Oh ye of great faith!

Saturday 26th Apr
Today’s parkrun was completed in record time (55.03) and a tiara!
As I started the walk I was $10 short of the $100 target I set for “wears tiara”, but I had great faith that my friends would come good on it so wore the tiara the entire way!
And boy did they do me proud!
3 sponsorships that have taken me past the $700 milestone!

Now it’s another $50 for me to reach echidna level
And only another $450 until I hike section ten of the LUFT in pjs and tiara! (On Tuesday morning)…

I have ten kms left to walk in the next three days. I will complete the kms, but I’m hustling to reach my fundraising goal, so the incentives to sponsor me will probably get quite silly in the hope my friends will pay for the entertainment of seeing me look ridiculous in public!

The secret support

Thursday 24th Apr
Just a huge thank you to the anonymous but generous collective of sponsors who have supported me so far to put me only five $ shy of the halfway $600
I might not be able to thank you individually, but your support means so much to wildlife rescue in Tasmania.
Only six days left to hustle!
I’m confident I will make my distance goals,
But I might not reach my $ goal.
I will wear crazy costumes for sponsors, so buy a challenge!
I will wear a tiara on my next walk if I get another $100 in sponsorship!

Lost sheep over the hill

Tuesday 22nd Apr
I’m on the downhill run now so the pace is picking up to increase my daily kms.
Hills now feel like slight rises, and my fitness is only limited by how my hip is behaving on the day.
This morning it was playing nice, as was the weather.
The Easter theme on Saturday was bunny ears, today was a flock of roaming sheep on the road.  As a car got the flock out of the way, I masqueraded as the good shepherdess and rounded up the remaining three sheep and encouraged them to make a ewe turn into a paddock.
I might be over the hill but I’m not mutton yet.

Over the hump and hills

Saturday 19th Apr
It’s been a big week of walking!
Getting up a huge hill to complete the fifth hill of truth in the LUFT (Launceston Urban Fringe Trail) and some short strolls along kanamaluka (Tamar river).
Then today I tried the Kate Reed reserve Parkrun for the first time.
It’s a trail run, so easier on my hip than my usual parkrun, and generally a slower course due to the uphills and down dales and rock hopping.
It was so much easier on my hip that it only took me three minutes longer than the Launceston course! I’m super chuffed about that and I felt fit and comfortable for the first half of it. The second half took a bit more determination as my hip started to hurt, and the last 200 metres were excruciating but also euphoric as I pushed through a wall of pain and hopped my way to the finish.
Yes, I was the only adult wearing bunny ears.  Not sorry.
Earned my Easter egg!

This has taken me past the halfway mark days and kms wise but I’m not quite halfway on fundraising, so I’m going to hustle hard over the remaining weeks.

A walk in the park!

Saturday 12th Apr
My fifth parkrun and a new PB of 57.56!
Not bad considering I left my back brace in the car, and I really needed it for the last two kms.
I prefer bushwalking but parkrun is really useful to measure improvement over time, I definitely feel I’m getting stronger and fitter, but it’s quite hard on my hip and today the nerves in my right leg were impacted which made every step a game of will the leg fold or hold me up?
Each electric spasm switched the glutes, quads and hamstring off and on in weird and unpredictable ways.
I just focused on keeping my core engaged as much as possible and trying to relax the hip flexors between each step.  It worked!
One step in front of the other!

It feels good to be back at parkrun after five weeks of missing it.

A lot of up!

Tuesday 8th Apr
109 mtrs of altitude gain in 2.7kms and 55 minutes.
What a way to start the day!
It began with some technical down a rough track but my hip was playing so nice today that it barely impeded me.
Then the uphill was definitely up, but relatively easy.
The view from the top was totally worth it, and I feel an incredible sense of achievement as this was the hill of intimidation that was far easier in reality.
I feel great!

All the little things.

Monday 7th Apr
Last week was filled with to-ing and froing, as my parents were visiting Tassie . So not a lot of official dedicated walks; but rather many steps racking up the kms.
They’ve returned to the mainland now so it’s back to normal programming plus deliberate get out and walk for WIRES!!!
It will be nice to get back to parkrun at the end of the week.
I’m a little short of my first week target kms but hopefully will get in the groove and make those up over the next few weeks.

Team turbo chooks is currently at #6 on the team leaderboard, and I need to start encouraging people to sponsor me to do my part in stepping up more places!

Help me raise $1200 even $5 at a time!
Every little bit helps and adds up!

No April fools!

Tuesday 1st Apr
Today’s hike began in the dark just before sunrise at 7am.  It was chilly and my body was struggling from a week of dance rehearsals and performances last week.
The track down was rough with lots of trip hazards that my head torch struggled to illuminate, but I took it slow and used my hiking poles to keep me upright.
As the light crept into the sky the track became much easier and the incline began.
Normally going up is much easier for my hip, but the previous week had taken its toll and I got to the top by sheer willpower and determined one foot slowly in front of the other.
Only a short hike (49 minutes) but technically challenging for my worn out body and a great way to start the challenge.
Trevallyn reserve is so peaceful at this time of the morning.  Only the occasional thump of pademelons bounding off and the raucous calls of cockatoos, kookaburra and ravens to break the stillness.

Thank you to my supporters
