🌿 Walking on the Wild Side – For Wildlife, Country & Community

Acknowledgment of Country

I acknowledge the Traditional Owners and Custodians of the land and waters on which I live and walk. I pay my deepest respects to Elders past, present, and emerging. Sovereignty was never ceded—this always was, and always will be, Aboriginal land. I am committed to walking gently, listening deeply, and supporting Indigenous-led conservation in all that I do.

Hi, I'm Sophie George – and I’m honoured to be the Coordinator of Capricorn Conservation Council (CCC), the leading voice for the environment in Central Queensland since 1973.

This April, I’m proud to be joining WIRES' Walk on the Wild Side 2025 alongside our incredible CCC Youth Sub Committee—a team of passionate young conservationists raising awareness and funds for Australia’s native wildlife.

As a biologist, environmental scientist, and fierce advocate for biodiversity and climate action, I know how urgently our ecosystems need protection. Every day, I witness the devastating impacts of habitat loss, climate change, and human expansion on the animals we share this continent with.

But I also see hope—in the next generation, in community action, and in powerful partnerships like this one.

Why I'm Walking 🐾

I’m walking for:

  • Koalas and gliders losing their homes to development

  • Flying foxes suffering through extreme heat events

  • Reptiles and raptors injured on roads with no rescue in sight

  • And every creature who can’t speak for itself

I’m also walking to empower the young people I mentor through CCC YSC. They are brave, bold, and committed to restoring and protecting the land they love. Walking with them is walking for the future.

Who We Are

We are the CCC Youth Sub Committee (YSC) – a passionate group of young environmental leaders aged 10–20 from across Central Queensland. Backed by Capricorn Conservation Council (CCC), we are the youth voice for the environment—advocating for biodiversity, climate action, and Indigenous-led conservation. We’re not waiting for the future to protect nature—we’re doing it now.

Founded by youth, for youth, and in collaboration with Traditional Custodians and Elders, we are guided by cultural knowledge, science, and community action. As part of CCC’s commitment to Indigenous leadership, sustainability, and youth empowerment, our Sub Committee is helping shape the future of conservation—on Country, in our schools, and through projects that protect our local ecosystems.

Why We're Walking for Wildlife

Every dollar we raise goes directly to WIRES—supporting emergency rescues, wildlife rehabilitation, and habitat recovery across Australia. But for us, this walk means even more.

This is our chance to:

  • Raise awareness for endangered wildlife in Central Queensland 🦜

  • Take action for animals affected by climate change and habitat loss 🌳

  • Connect with Country, guided by Elders, as we walk with purpose 🚶🏽‍♀️

  • Inspire others—because youth voices matter, and we're leading the way! 💪🏽

We’re proud to represent the heart and soul of conservation in CQ—working alongside CCC to bring young people into leadership roles, restore habitat, and make biodiversity protection a priority for our region.

What We Stand For

Backed by our Terms of Reference and CCC’s Strategic Plan 2025–2026, we’re working toward a stronger, greener future by:

  • Advocating for stronger environmental protections at all levels of government

  • Collaborating with Traditional Custodians and conservation groups

  • Supporting tree planting, land restoration, and climate resilience

  • Delivering education programs that empower the next generation

  • Hosting youth-led events that bring communities together for nature

We’ve got the support of our local councils, schools, and families. Even Livingstone Shire Council says: “They’re not just future leaders—they’re leading now.”

Walk With Us or Support Our Steps 🥾

Whether you're in Yeppoon, Rockhampton, or beyond, you can walk with us in person or remotely. Join our team, or support our fundraising goal to help wildlife in crisis.

Every donation—big or small—helps us:

  • Support WIRES wildlife carers

  • Fund youth-led conservation campaigns

  • Create more opportunities for on-Country learning and leadership

Let’s Do This—For Wildlife, For Country, For the Future 💚

This is our moment to show that youth voices + community action = powerful change. So walk on the wild side with us and let’s make a difference—step by step, together.
